The Default Featureset for Tomorrow's Online Newspaper.
Caught up with a fellow ex-sensis friend that setup their own directory play since (successfully) and we were discussing the future of newspapers (as well as directories) Efforts like MySun from The Sun Newspaper are definitely the start of what soon will be the default for every newspaper.
It's especially pleasing to see rss reader functionality built in. Sometimes it's not about being cutting edge (although it would be nice) but just making a start. Will be interesting to see if there is a domino effect - given that there are newspapers in every city of the world. Similar to around 1995-8 when one by one, they got online sites, and then classifieds and so on.
Mashable has the juice again : "Usually, when newspapers try to get into social features, feedreaders and the like, it’s a disaster. Not so here: the discussion forums are particularly compelling, and the profile pages will have users racking up the pageviews like never before. The only change I would have made (apart from RSS support), is to favor users with photos over those without: a lot of pages are filled with blank profile images. And although this looks at lot like social networking, technically-speaking it isn’t: despite all the interconnectedness between users, you can’t build a network of friends. All in all, though, it’s a pretty good attempt when you’d expect a total failure. Will any US papers follow suit?"
