Local Contextual on Google Maps.

It's blowing a bit of a mini-seaside gale down here this morning, and "local contextual" is one of my high priority areas of interest at moment : So Google's leveraging and pathway to (free/performance) monetisation of Google Maps is an interesting strategy.

People often question me on the value of "local" - and when it comes to communities, content and advertising - local often beats global. Fact is people shop and interact close to home - Whether it be McDonalds, Wal-Mart (Bunnings here) or their local favourite; "Aggregating eyeballs" at the local level will only increase in value, irrespective of where the technology and software tools have been developed.

NYT : "Google will let any business offer discount coupons to people who use its Google Maps service, which also acts as an online yellow pages. A business will be able to upload information for coupons, including images, and Google will display a link to those coupons when the business name is displayed. Users can then print the coupons and take them to the merchant."
