The $27m Camino Chess Piece for eBay/Skype
I missed this earlier in the week - Camino was setup a few months ago with less than 10 VOIP super-specialists ("high quality speech processing, coding, and transmission for the next generation of Internet-based networks.") working in the business. Now its 997 Turbo Cabs all round, as eBay buy them for Skype for $27m.
VOIP Watch is quoting an industry specialist - 'Andrew Sviridenko, Chairman of Russia based Spirit DSP', as you do ;) In Portal 1.0 land, it was envisioned that once the media/advertising business was transformed, telecommunications and financial services would be the next portalicized : And that is what GEMAYA is doing, sometimes needing to deal with ex-KGB to be the new Superpowers ! I sense some Valleywag Lloyd "Braun Identity 3" jokes coming on. (i'm making bad nervous jokes here because the technology being used to here aint exactly an adserver and html content - portals need to become hyperadvanced voip innovators if they are to capitalise on all the user and revenue stream opportunities. Even in Australia, 9MSN + Yahoo7 are talking up these services downunder. i wonder how that will play out. i digress)
VOIP Watch : "This is Skype / eBay move in the right direction to complete with Microsoft, Google, AOL and Yahoo, as Andy points out (added Google which is very strong technology company and top eBay competitor), Skype core biz is voice and it cannot afford to depend on the 3rd party license, but must own the core voice technology, as Microsoft does. However Sonorit/Camino is too small (less then 10 people), was formed as a company just several months ago, has no shipping product, has no single customer, so this acquisition does not solve Skype technology hole yet."
