Philip Kaplan, the founder of fu**edcompany.com built a self service ad system while commenting on dot-bomb due to advertiser demand for a text link here and there. Great podcasts with Philip - direct link @ venturevoice and chris pirillo. Running at 30%+ monthly growth and Sequioa funding, Kaplan moved to San Francisco, and adbrite.com is on the way to the Billion Dollar VC Home Run. Sequioa ! Easy Money ! Adbrite allows you to buy CPC ads with a credit card from thousands of sites such as alexa, linkedin, and a publisher list growing at exponential rate. The publisher keeps 75% of the ad revenue. Adbrite keep 25%. It's why Adbrite are happy to say they are the ebay of advertising auctions.

Adbrite, in the same way the majority of new ebay branded items may have their branding authenticity questioned.. also have to fight splogging robot adsense fu**edgoogle.com 20% of clicks are fraud issues. From Google, YHOO/Overture, Blogads, Technorati, Feedster, and any other players in either 1.0 Web Search, 2.0 Contextual ad networks, and 'Live Web' Businesses as the Doc Searls calls them, that allow users to set up RSS feeds (that can be stolen), do keyword searches (that can be optimised to automated content/adsense pages), have watchlists (that drive more traffic to google ads).. do Blog Search (take you to a blog of kristen a sex crazed robot who is 21 yrs and likes 'titties' whose home page is on a amateur paid sex site !).. Basically anything that leads to anymore CLICKS ON LONG TAIL ADS which pay out hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars to individual sites (listen to the pirillo podcast on this - lots of sites earning a $1m from adbrite).. No wonder.. robots are starting to takeover... which is why I'm about to move my blog from Blogger to WordPress. In fact, Ive decided I wont write anymore, I've paid $39.95 per month for 3 years for a Russian Mafia Robot who 24 hours a day will create websites, syndicate content and optimise Long Tail Ads ! Yippee ! Ill just provide my address for the cheques.

Within this context Doc Searls writes a rocking piece from the heart about the future of paid newspapers online, which by the end of the article you are left wondering "Was this a Robert Altman 'Short Cuts' type blog with 3 different narratives ?" (which i always like actually...Nashville eh ?) The connection point though is that google, feedster, technorati etc.. as a benchmark have to deliver the ad, collect the revenue, and pay the publisher 75% of revenue. So the newspaper business ain't necessarily that bad if they can get their subscription for users, and long tail advertising outsourcing online rocking. Especially if fighting splogs could constitute a 10% COGS !

From Doc Searls - "I can tell you that there are plenty of folks in the stable (if threatened) business we call publishing that are glad to grab some ad money on the Live Web, then charge for access to the same content on the Static Web, in faith that this is the model that will work in the long run."

I was enjoying the article tremendously even as he got into the dark side of Really Simply Stealing and the issues that Marc Cuban calls 'Splogs' that f***dgoogle.com also commonly refer to as 20%+ of all Google's clicks are fraudulent... not to mention dropping this pearler on Yahoo vs Technorati FTE : "Earlier a Yahoo employee told me Yahoo has more people working on blog spam than Technorati has people."

The Doc rightly believes "there is an enormous amount of duplicated effort fighting splogs and other forms of blog spam. There is an open source solution to this: share the know-how. Even the data (perhaps through a public list of offenders)." The solution he says is "Open-sourcing expertise is the right thing to do for the free marketplace we call the Net, as well as for all the responsible leaders there. Especially when we're fighting a cancer as malignant as this one." MMM, I wonder how Newscorp/Fox Interactive Media Group will deal with Splogs.. with all their newspaper (and media assets) plus online properties such as Fox, MySpace, Scout.. and at least one search engine - whether it be video, blog, or traditional !!!
