Podcasting vs RSS

Newsgator just announced 'podcasting support' - From Greg Reinacker :"You can now find podcasts from within NewsGator web edition, click "Add to Podcasts", and download them to your iPod (or other portable device) using FeedStation."

This deserves a full post but I totally agreed with Dick Costollo that there will be many flavours of RSS clients. Its the order of the universe.

In a world where design and focus is everything, and an IPOD is the player, you need a podcasting specific client.

I dont think podcasting will become a subset of RSS players in the near term. Until someone figures out how to do tabbed RSS reading (my "news" "auctions" "classifieds" "music" "podcasts" etc) we will have segment leaders in the RSS space.

And anyone that thinks the ipodders (lemox and x), nimiq, doppler, podcastalley etc are all going to just stop what they are doing is wrong. Expect the small players to get together where the podcast directories and podcatchers become even more integrated.

Cant wait to see what is coming out of Gnomedex conference, from both big and small players, especially to see what new podcasting and RSS software is demo'd and released :

"On Friday you'll see how deeply integrated RSS is in the architecture of the browser. But that's just the tip of what may turn out to be a very big iceberg. The people at Microsoft noticed something that I had seen, only peripherally -- that there were applications of RSS that aren't about news. Like Audible's NY Times Best Seller list, or an iTunes music playlist, or lists of Sharepoint documents, or browser bookmarks. Lists are all over the place, and people are starting to move them around via RSS, and they are not the usual kind of data that has been carried by RSS in the past."
