Gender Allegations Rock Mind Camp
When Kanye West flipped the black thing on Katrina, Austin Powers was at a loss for words. There seems to be a similar slight of hand going on here by the wordsmiths at newspapers covering 2.0 Camps : Women are quoted about 'parties', 'free beer', sometimes a question about marketing, gender or event running is thrown in. Men while portrayed better (smart, engineering) also conform to typical stereotypes : Pictures of engineers chasing dog like alpha-robots around office space end up looking like grownup versions of the dufus' from the Wonder Years. Neither gender is coming off well, and the real problem is the gender imbalance to start with, which makes its easy for the journos to lock and load. It seems eons ago now that BlogHer came, excited, then simmered again, when really its spirit needed to be assimilated into all the new events that are mutating around town.
If Open API, Web 2.0 technology cant solve the gender equation (as Bill Gates found very early on when trying to solve third world problems), this issue may well escalate to a Maureen Dowd behind the firewall NYT article : the role of women in technology commercialisation, web 2.0 and the use of gender within 24 hour hackathons and the role of media in perpetuating 'female as helper, assistant' archetypes. Tara Banks will then go undercover as a blogger for the day and attend Hypercamp.
