aol pays $25m to own the 'sphere.
Some days its good to see little bits of positive news (like clients agreeing to pay u, altho paying would be better if amount is already owing) and other industry tidbits like once was blog search engine sphere that became a 'related content engine' being bought by AOL for a reported $25M. (we offer a similar product to local publishers for local content and spent yday pitching 7 VC's exactly this space.. but hey its not mountain view 'ere.)
What is interesting is the acquisition driver, which rather than being part of adding blog search to their corporate search strategy (which is unwinnable given google's market share) AOL's strategy is to use the content to complement what they already have, interesting. I wonder if AOL will continue to power all of sphere's media customers ? Or should I say Yahoo's media customers ?
TechCrunch paraphrasing AOL's relevant exec : "They are growing a number of micro/niche brands, he said, and leveraging what he calls “passion points” of small but passionate audiences. Sphere fits right into that by showing relevant content to users, and getting AOL content in front of more users."
Would love to know the revenue multiple on this deal (any1 know?) and whether its higher or lower than Demand Media's acquisition at 7.5 times revenue of Pluck.com who own the blogburst content syndication product,
OK yday was spent pitching 8 VC's on exactly this topic. Today operational client work. Open up powerpoint, create 20 slide pack, just between emails, attachments, intranets, cutnpaste. Wash, rinse, repeat.
*Legs are killing from daily continual gym punishment, but im at least in the zone in a positive way there, and may as well drive thru that lactic acid pain barrier. (sore legs really dont like sitting in front of computer at temporary work station on a bad posture seat, ok i digress... neat that sphere got bought!) Must. Punish. Legs. And. Powerpoint.
