In Australia, it's a national sport to play "Cut Down the Tall Poppy" which means dont let someone become too successful. Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts, the Australian part of Russell Crowe and many others have faced the rath of The Tall Poppy Syndrome. On a micro scale, the dot com industry, far more than in the US, was happily cut down to the size in the early 2000's by the powers that be, to the point where Web 2.0, blogging, RSS and heck even podcasting are still barely on the radar. So Im last to want to cut a Curry. To the story, which as with Wikipedia anyone "IS" entitled to their story. So this is my filtering....

The Adam Curry Wikipedia Episode : Soon to be a mini-series on Podshow according to Curry where all the major players will talk about the history of podcasting. Like a Podsafe XMAS though, dont expect a non RAIA compliant mashup of events. This will be a battle of spin , interpretation and power. To which I believe Adam Curry should win. If he is honest and transparent enough. He apologised - that is standard spin 101 management. Tick. (get Steve Rubel on the phone dammit Patricia) "Wow, I stand corrected. Thanks to this posting I was able to find this video of Kevin Marks demoing an applescript downloading mp3 enclosures straight to his ipod. I stand corrected. I never saw this demonstration and it shows a lot more of the history of 'audio on the web' than I've been aware of. I apologize to Kevin Marks for my history of removing this fact on WikiPedia. I really believed this was untrue and certainly wouldn't have gone through all the trouble of learning applescript if I knew it already existed. In fact, in the video, Kevin even remarks about our conversation of the need for this functionality, which he built right there at BloggerCon! Kevin, what happened? Why didn't we end up using your script? This remains a mystery to me. Wow, this video is really incredible, some of the things being said are incredibly visionary, and I'm not even in the room ;)"

Adam Curry told the story on todays Daily Source Code (he had just been to London to meet with the B-yers of KPCB) and no doubt pre-briefed his 'perspective' on it all, as we all would do. (the real audience of his podcast today was pretty obvious : K + S) There is no doubt Adam Curry was an absolutely central player in podcasting's birth, the one with the best ability to market this service to the masses, but the unresolved core question (as it is often with Open Source vs G-Evil Business People) is the compensation and attribution to the "developers" and technical wizards for the Podcatching Apple Scripts and related podcasting enclosures technology. Curry had every right to setup Boku/Podshow and share in 100% of the commercial gain with Mr Bloom, Kleiner, Sequioa, employees and acquired businesses. (eg podcastalley) That Dave Winer doesn't have any equity that Im aware of, in Boku, or Podshow, for his contribution is pretty insane. It's part of the reason Curry is getting the heat, not just the "celebrity-like" phenemonon he attributes it to. On Curry's side, his Podshow business is seeming more about Podcasting Eyeballs first (The 100 million listener march as he says) and technology second. This is where I think the Co-Co-Co-Podfather might face some trouble.

Firstly, I wish Curry was ploughing more resources into the Podcasting Tools side and making those easy to use, and ubiquitous; I want a better, smarter more feature driven Podcatcher. Im still using Ipodder Lemon and while it is miles ahead of Odeo, Itunes etc, there is lots of room for improvement here. I'm also not sure what Curry's "involvement" or stake in Ipodder Lemon past having the Ipodder client's directory default to Podshows' and being one of the sites they represent when selling advertising. Does he own it ?

Second - Castblaster and podcasting creation tool for the masses need to improve. Where is the Castblaster tool Curry used to always talk about, but is relatively silent about now ? Odeo's creation tool took forever and even though the buttons were big the solution was small, and doesnt work on an average (read Australian) broadband line. Cant someone please make something easier than Audacity for creating a podcast ? Curry should be perfectly placed to do so. (it will also help when google wants a podcasting acquisition)

Third - Podcasting Ratings : PodcastAlley, Itunes, Yahoo Podcasts, Podcast Pickle, Podtrac, Audible etc - are all so broken, such awful methodologies, that they simply are totally inaccurate. Its like when people used to talk about 'hits' for a webpage as a measure of traffic. Curry has said he is more about human talent than algorithmic recommendations and seems happy to let others fail when it comes to ratings and personalisation. He could get on the front foot though, and release how many active listeners and downloads Daily Source Code had, and then other Podshows - similar to how Feedburner release toplevel stats. This in itself would help the industry. He's an open book when it comes to getting help from developers, but if you want user stats (back), you'd want to be a Madison Avenue agency.. "Our network reaches millions of listeners" said the Podfather at the Miami party for Jermaine Dupri.....

Finally - The real issue is Podshow's talent picking. And each to his own. Cameron Reilly, founder of The Podcast Network (another aussie) and I talk often about the ideal breakdown of a podcasting network's programming. Cameron has his own views on this which are working very solidly for him, and will ensure he has quality reach into an AB Audience across a network of attractive advertiser and user 'channels' or shows. Another successful approach is John Furrier's exclusive press release/product announcements for new technology which ensures millions of downloads a month over at PodTech. Curry's approach on the other hand, echoing MTV, is to identify "Indie" Programmers, that he can Miramax and take mainstream. My problem with Podshow (and I listen to Dawn and Drew, Daily Source Code everyday) is the programming picks to me, require more Miramaxisation. They won't be tomorrow's Carson Daly's or Howard Sterns - while there are others in the non-Podshow land that are showing the signs they have it : Solutions to this problem will be "announced" around XMAS (please no more damn announcements about damn announcements - just say it or not, dont say you are going to say it) This Solution is to be known as The Podcast Delivery Network - where Podshow provide the hosting, tools, and monetisation for podcasters, so they can quit their day job. Which is f'n great. And this is why I respect Curry. He is the only one (in the current market) who could possibly achieve an outcome that professional, passionate, high reaching podcasters could quit their day job. It will also be a very smart arbitrage to use a Fred Wilson "market" definition, because Curry may well, with his Podcast Delivery Network, lock in multi-year, copyright and revenue terms, that gets him access to very cheap talent. But will he pick the right talent is my question ? Lets have a quick look at his talent picking to date through the ratings and podshow's :

In current PodcastAlley ratings
, there is only one Podshow controlled show in the Top 10 : Dawn and Drew at Number 5 - Soccergirl is at #10 but she is just being hosted by Podshow at moment. Dawn and Drew have certainly improved since 'going full time' with podcasting, and now that they publish 5 times a week, and when Dawn gets juiced up on sugar/gin the show seem alot better. I dont see Dawn and Drew really improving much on where they are now. Whatever they are doing, just keep doing it and doing more of it, because other Podshow shows arent even within the Top 50 of Podcast Alley ratings, as useless as these ratings are, it shows they're not being gamed well. Even Curry himself has been talking up people voting for him on the PAlley, because if you dont, well if I was an advertiser I would start asking. Keith and The Girl (#3 on podcastalley) are higher than all Podshow shows and the funniest podcast there is (and most minutes per week, plus if you look at pure 'talking' which is what everyone wants, they provide 5 times more spoken word than Daily Source Code, but they dont have to manage Kleiner Perkins and Sequioa, they only have to manage East Coast Parents when they are doing their clown jobs to pay the bills !! Dont sell yet K+TG, wait for the real offers to come in in 24 months) : It will be interesting to see how long Keith + Chemda stay independent, but I would think their business has a value of $2m-$5m today. (but a far higher value if they hold and grow users/revenue etc eg $10m-$15m by late 2007 ie 50 times earnings) So, It will be interesting to see what the terms Podshow put around their Podcast Delivery Network, and if the Mitch Ratcliffe's and Audible, will swoop/undercut and go for talent, in a similar way to what happens in radio. Can anyone say Howard Stern :) ? Either way, podcasting human talent, and comprehensive accurate podcasting ratings, and personalised recommendations are only going to go up in value for the people that have true assets in this space. Man I agree with Curry, this is a damn exciting space - Makes we want to leave Australia and setup The CAA (Creative Artists Agency) for Podcasters, and make sure each podcasters retains ownership of their art, develops the right "projects", select the right "scripts" and "directors" oops I meant "enclosures" and the agent gets paid 10-20% of revenue not get the copyright or 50% of revenue/profit/equity etc.

The Daily Source Code itself isnt profiled within the top 20 of Itunes 'Podcast Today' but it is possibly the podcast and podshow with the most subscribers. Curry seems to talk for about 10-15 minutes on average per show with the rest devoted to audio promos of other podcasts and music - which used to include mashups of legal songs, but now is only podsafe. The current emphasis on XMAS Podsafe songs leaves many of the technology listeners wishing for audio only gossip about Kleiner Perkins and Dave Winer, but the show is very well produced and still hasnt nearly be cloned or mini-me'd within Podshow. Much respect to Curry doing a show in any location at anytime on any device - Most of us would have said "I am to busy, I have venture capital to spend and deliver a return on" and his show is symbiotic with Podshow and the investment : He has 50times the profile of all other podcasters in his stable and an equivalent multiple of reach. Podshow actually need more Adam Curry's. (a topic he has mentioned before referring to needing more "guides" to the podcast world - just no more promos please - audio promos Adam suck big time - but we like it when you say I tried this podcast out and it rocked, like you did with Lost Podcast)

Podshow also has some great quality music/shows like RocknRoll Geekshow, and the Podsafe Music Network, but some of the second tier 'talk shows' such as Yeast Radio are largely cringeworthy/niche, whatever their off-off-off broadway appeal. Other niche niche podcast shows include a "Fly with me" plane/flight show (which is actually not bad, but please tell me Podshow have a podcasting screen or criteria which is beyond "Adam likes flying planes. These guys have a plane podcast. Lets put the plane show on Podshow." (this sort of marketing decision making happens in more than just podcasting as we all know.. if adam played golf, im sure podshow would have a golf podcast etc) Id think the high rating, high advertiser interest categories which Podshow would want to stick to are technology and entertainment, etc. In technology, Podshow actually have very little to no offerings other than Gillmor Gang, while others like John Furrier are doing huge work helping companies use podcasts as a way to release new products rather than the traditional press release or even blog. Similarly in entertainment, Podshow need more edgy comedy (Stern, Keith etc) More entertainment gossip (like perezhilton.com for audio - and not a madge weinstein tour around hollywood hills - awful btw that show) They also need younger targeted music shows in urban, R+B, hip hop, dance - Not everyone wants a retirement home XMAS song. Throw in a podcast about film (like reelreviews used to be), maybe one about shopping consumer, some more financial/property/auto too (to cover off those advertiser categories) and Podshow would have something :))) Not that it happens overnight I know. I've heard Cameron try and recruit podcasters, grow them, only to see them either not publish enough or get arrogant they can do it themselves. I'm sure Podshow will refine this and the Podshow Delivery Network will aim to plug gaps in programming, and provide a better "network" to advertisers and listeners. This is just my 2 cents worth, like Wikipedia, everyone can have an opinion, and the best of us build businesses out of them, and Podshow is ahead of the rest in this space.

Podshow has plans to produce pilot gameshows and a fictional series, produced by PacificCoastHellway which is a right on idea. Creating new formats derived from ones that have worked (or didnt) on TV and radio (past and present) is the smart way to build tomorrow's podcast networks - Its exactly how Hollywood works; A Podcast of the Superbowl for example with audio from the coaches of each team for example; Audio for TV shows - such as Lost is doing, that run in realtime with the show, but give you insight/gossip on what is happening onscreen are only going to increase in size, but some of podcasting's future is in cross media integration esp with TV "I'm a Celebrity, get me out of here, I need a Podcast !" - Where are the reality TV shows that were too extreme/niche for TV, they should be repurposed to podcasting ? Terry Semel and Braun ?

Curry has a matrix of 4 types of people in this World :

1. Happy with Hair
2. Happy without Hair
3. Unhappy with Hair
4. Unhappy without Hair

He implicitly places himself as Happy with Hair, and believes many 'detractors' are Unhappy without Hair. Let me say, Im not a detractor of Adam Curry : Im an Aussie (we snark ok adam ?), with Hair (as much if not more as Currys - im much younger) and am happily building my own little piece of technology and snarking along. Curry's Podshow will be the first of the most successful Podcasting businesses, and with the same backers of G-evil, who knows - but I hope curry keeps pushing podcasting, and learns to anonymise/cache IP addresses, and he shouldnt have just deleted the entrys with Dave Winer and others input; What they did mattered. He should have finished what he started. As he must do with Podcasting. Good Luck Ads.

yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
I think I did it again
I made you believe we're more than just friends
Oh baby
It might seem like a crush
But it doesn't mean that I'm serious
'Cause to lose all my senses
That is just so typically me
Oh baby, baby
Oops!...I did it again
I played with your heart, got lost in the game
Oh baby, baby
Oops!...You think I'm in love
That I'm sent from above
I'm not that innocent
You see my problem is this
I'm dreaming away
Wishing that heroes, they truly exist
I cry, watching the days
Can't you see I'm a fool in so many ways
But to lose all my senses
That is just so typically me
Baby, oh
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

"Well baby, I went down and got it for you"
"Oh, you shouldn't have"

Got lost in this game, oh baby
