Do You Podhoo ?
Did I mention (100 times) how broken podcasting ratings are ? From podcastalley to itunes to the podcast pickle-man !!!! anyway, Yahoo Podcasts has launched (listen to conference call here), and I have alot of respect for those ex Nullsoft ex Beastie Boys now Yahoo Music Crossover Mp3, ID3 luvn remixers (minus their O/S bias) : Im about to check the service out... the home page looks kewl. BUT - Like Itunes, Odeo and Podcastingnews, no-one is yet able to editorially, algorithmically or wikipediaise, or TIVO podcasting down to the "hot shit", let alone the HOT SHIT FOR ME. Anyway it will come. Someone will take the pandora meets flickr clusters/interestingness approach to podcasting. One specific example with 45 seconds on Yahoo Podcasts : I click on the 'Comedy' Category from the home page. It doesn't come back with the most subscribed to Podcasts in Comedy, nor the most voted for, from what I can gather. Search Results are split in two - 'Top' Podcasts of which there are only 3, then about 10+ of 'podcasts containing "comedy"' (of which the most seem to be German ??? !!! The Top 3 are :
1. Comedy 365
The UK's most downloaded independent podcast. Official website: www.comedy365.co.uk
2. -Teknikal Diffikulties-
Comedy what's armed to the teeth!
Tags: sketch, old time radio, hilarity, funny, comedy
3. The Bitterest PillThe Dan Klass Show: Comedy, commentary and music from a stay-at-home dad/shut-in.
Sorry, but I have listened to podcasts 3-4 hours a day all of 2005 (and for the 3 years before that I spent equivalent amount of time on talkback radio during commute), and the above podcasts all SUCK. Sorry, um, they actually suck. And I say that relatively. Maybe what I say is personal preference, some people find Dan Klass and his 'bitter pill' dance party basement experiences funny (ask shite.com bout dat) but then you have REALLY funny podcasts like : Keithandthegirl.com and pacificcoasthellway.com. Or maybe I like those podcasts but other people think they suck. But I just wonder how all the RSS, ratings, delicious like, Yahoo MyWeb, 360 etc elements can be integrated to make the podcasting 'selections' smarter. Or hire a PHYSICAL PRODUCER who knows the target audience and likes podcasting. (dumb suggestion i know) Oh, and is it just me, but man Im sick of really bland, dumb, stupid blobby TAG CLOUDS. Enough already of the dumb directories built by the 4 users who tagged 'stripper' on a podcast, image, video or weblink. OK, rant over. (just dont launch product features that arent ready and just keep the great ones in that are ready for the home page) Segueway to the Co-Podfathers break of story (ive been sick last 48 hours not sure when this broke) as it's got some chilli-flakes on it :
Mr Winer : "Major site launch: http://podcasts.yahoo.com/. I got an advance look at the site and had a chance to sit down with the team on Sept 21 in Sunnyvale, CA. We talked about formats, protocols, how to work with the community at a content and technical level, and linking into the community directory. At this point, I'm not sure how much of this Yahoo did, we'll be diving in over the next few days for sure. But they were the first podcasting network site to do this, Odeo didn't do it, nor did Apple or Podshow. No matter what Yahoo did, at least they talked, listened and trusted, and that's a start. To Apple and the others, we didn't leak their product, we respected their right to keep it confidential. Anyway, net-net, it's great to have Yahoo in this ballgame."
